August 30 at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market
August 28, 2008
Hello to all friends of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market.
What’s at Market, August 30, 2008, 8am-12pm, at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes, DE
Hello friends!
Big doin’s at the Market this Saturday. Not only will you find an amazing selection of fruits, vegetables, plants, and baked goods, but we are going to have two drawings. At 10 am, venerable Councilman Ted Becker, who talks recycling “trash” almost every Saturday at the Market, will pick the winner of an Historic Lewes Farmers Market Bag with a copy of Deborah Madison’s Local Flavors: Cooking and Eating from America’s Farmers’ Markets. The winner will be one of the folk who took the I Eat Local Pledge. At 11 am, that bicycling demon of the roadways, Councilwoman Barbara Vaughan, will pick the winner of the green 2008 Official Historic Lewes Farmers Market Phat Sea Crest 3 Cruiser. This is a much anticipated event, and if you want to see grown men crying, mothers wailing, and dogs howling when they find out they didn’t win this vintage green machine, then come to the drawing.
Food Drive August 30, September 6, and September 13
In addition to our weekly gleaning of fresh produce, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market is sponsoring a food drive for Casa San Francisco’s Food Bank. Please bring your donation to the Market on August 30, September 6 and September 13 to the HLFM table. Here are the specific items that the food bank has requested: spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf stable milk, rice, and beans. Please honor our mission and the health needs of folk who use the food bank by providing healthy foods.
Goodbye Great Green Bike!
If you get to the market before 11am (when the drawing takes place) you can get in one more chance to win the vintage green 2008 Official Historic Lewes Farmers Market Phat Sea Crest 3 Cruiser. We give away a bicycle every year to encourage all of you who are able, to get out of your cars and bike (or walk) to the market. For those who just cannot live without this bicycle, it is available by special order through Lewes Cycle–over the bridge on Savannah Road.
The very popular Children’s Reading Program at the Market takes place 9-10 am every Saturday at the School House at the Lewes Historical Society Complex. Children’s Librarian, Maureen Miller, reads the stories and interacts with the kids to plant seeds, make bees out of pipe cleaners, and do lots of other fun projects. For ages 3 to 8, but all children are welcome and encouraged to attend with their parents. Each week a special book is chosen to reflect the themes of growth, change and healthy eating. This week the featured book is Get Up and Go! by Nancy Carlson. Read more
