Lewes: Striper Bites

July 23, 2008

One of the area’s finest, most consistent restaurants is Striper Bites, a cozy bistro on Lewes‘ Savannah Road across from the entrance to Second Street. Complete with patio seating, porch seating and indoor seating, there’s something for everyone this time of year at Striper Bites in Lewes.

The lunch menu begins with traditional appetizers like nachos and wings, along with the “Lewes Beach Bruschetta,” described as ‘a warm tower of grilled squash, tomatoes, & asiago cheese on crisp sourdough bread topped with a basil pesto & balsamic reduction.’ Quite tasty. Great soups and salads appear as well.

The main lunch offerings include the Striper Bites Club, featuring rockfish; grilled fish tacos; jumbo lump crab cake & ahi tuna.

For dinner, prepare to feast on Lewes Fisherman’s Stew (homemade seafood fume, halibut, mussels, shrimp, tomatoes and potatoes all topped with a mini crabcake), Asiago Scallops (grilled jumbo sea scallops with asiago cream sauce , marinated tomatoes, grilled zucchini and basil pesto), or the locals’ (me included) favorite - the blackened tuna pasta (lightly blackened tuna over penne pasta tossed in a tomato and braised fennel cream sauce). Striper Bites is known for their consistency, and I’ve never had a bad meal there in five years.

The decor is particularly appealing. Having spent a lot of time in some of New England’s harbor towns as a child, there is a distinct New England-meets-Key West feel to Striper Bites that you really ought to experience for yourself.

Take the time to visit Striper Bites this summer. You’ll be glad you did.

Rehoboth Beach: Eden Restaurant

July 12, 2008

One of the gems of the Delaware Beach dining scene, Eden on Rehoboth Beach’s Baltimore Avenue provides a tremendous dining experience. Wilmington News-Journal food critic Eric Ruth called Eden a “three-star trip to far-off places.” And he may even be short a star.

The first indication that you’ve stumbled upon something special is the wine list. From great values like a Marquis Phillips 2005 Shiraz or a Chalone Chardonnay 2005 to big hitters like BV Georges de Latour 2002, Shafer ‘Hillside Select’ and Opus One, the list demands a full perusal.

Our table was tucked away next to a fireplace and the wine room. (It could be the best table for six in the entire Rehoboth area.) Appetizers included an artisanal cheese plate and a lobster and crab tower with guacamole. Satisfaction all around. Read more

For many Dewey Beach summer seasons, Gary Cannon and his staff at Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill have served up the finest in healthy summer cuisine. If you’re looking for junk food, you will not be stopping at Gary’s.

However, if you’re looking for a seared cajun catfish sandwich or a turkey cheesesteak for lunch, point your compass to the corner of Highway One and New Orleans Street in the heart of Dewey Beach. Also available during the daytime hours are a variety of salads, hummus, fresh pasta salad, blackened tuna or turkey burger on a wrap and even soy burgers. Read more

Hawaiian Food Dewey Style

June 12, 2008

Tonight I ventured back to Nalu with a friend for a relaxing dinner. Craig, who used to manage the Summerhouse and now has taken over the duties as general manager at Nalu, greeted me when I sat down with a big Hawaiian hello.

Then, not thinking I would run into another famous Summerhouse employee, Big Bill surfaced to my right. A reunion of sorts transpired, as I have not seen either in a while. Anyway, back to the blog. Read more
