Weekend Plans
July 17, 2008
The weekend is upon us again and I would like to remind all viewers that if you are planning to enjoy the outdoors to be aware of ticks. During the summer ticks feed on rodents and whitetail deer in our area. We, as humans, are easy targets in wooded areas, dune grass, and along the edge of fields. The best prevention is to check your body at the end of the day; however spraying bug repellent with DEET before you venture outdoors is also a good idea.
Other preventative measures include wearing long sleeved clothes, bright color shirts and shorts, and staying away from popular tick habitat such as tall grass and woody areas.
If you do find a tick ask a friend to remove it with tweezers very carefully. If you notice a red rash or “Bulls Eye” on your body you probably have the first stages of Lyme Disease. Seek medical attention right away. LD can be cured in the early stages.
For more information on ticks visit www.lyme.org.

Four sobriety checkpoints were conducted last weekend (July 11 - 12). Participating agencies included Delaware State Police Troops 3 & 4, Dover Police, and the New Castle County DUI Task Force. In addition to the 28 DUI arrests, officers issued four citations for underage drinking violations, apprehended 9 wanted individuals, made 4 drug arrests, 4 felony arrests, and issued 7 seat belt citations for unbuckled drivers and/or passengers. Officers also issued 101 citations for various other traffic violations.
For the coming weekend (July 18 - 19) four sobriety checkpoints are scheduled: Newark (NcCo DUI Task Force), Millsboro (Millsboro Police), Georgetown (Georgetown Police) and Smyrna (Smyrna/Clayton police joint checkpoint).
For weekly and ongoing campaign statistical updates please visit our website at www.ohs.delaware.gov and click on the Checkpoint Strikeforce icon in the center of the page.
Now in its seventh year, “Checkpoint Strikeforce” is a multi-state crackdown on impaired drivers coordinated locally by the Delaware Office of Highway Safety. Participating law enforcement agencies are conducting weekly DUI checkpoints through New Year’s Eve, and monthly checkpoints in the spring, all with the goal of at deterring impaired drivers and arresting DUI offenders. “Checkpoint Strikeforce” is also one of the three major safety initiatives under the “120 Days of Summer HEAT” campaign targeting violators of Delaware’s traffic laws. Traffic deaths kill and injure Delawareans nearly twice as often as violent crimes.
